Well, I can understand Lorenz in that point.
I find it always very frustrating if poeple simply copy things- I don't know, if that is a problem in other countries, and i doubt so. but here in germany some reenactors seem to be very lazy.
Of course I'm sure- and you also point out- that you, Alex, don't want to do this.
Maybe Lorenz can provide some photos of the original in the museum.

As for the photo at the top of this thread, I would say "no". Not only because of the parchement, but also because of the general details, although I cannot point out which.
I think I also have pictures or even an article on this lantern, I can look that up at home this evening.

I can definetly understand if he doesnt want to share his constructional drawings, im mostly interested in pictures of the original.

We have the same problem here in sweden, someone makes an interpretation of an original and the next summer you got 10people with their own version of it, and no one has seen the original. And the same with a lot of armourretailers who seem to spend more time checking out other peoples websites for designs to steal than theyspend on reading books and articles.

If you have some it would be great if you could share them with us, im getting more and more curious about the construction. Especially if the wooden panels really are just nailed to the upper and lower part like that, from a carpenters point of view i would prefer to make a groove in the wood and join them together more sturdily.

Hi everybody,

have a look at my beautiful new lantern!

It is a replica from the one in the London Museum.

I have bought in a reenactment shop in Portugal I found in the web just recently being really recommendable!

Please try this link - they have a lot of good stuff, armours etc. at reasonable prices, and the communication with them is excellent.

Hm, Astrid, no offense- but the one(s) I know from smithfield look differently, and are not made from brass, but copper.

This one looks more like something made too look kinda the ones surviving combined, but it's no replica from that now displayed in london.

Ach, Jens,...
You are right, it is no "replica" - I should have looked up the word first.
It is an "emulation" being SIMILAR to the Smithfield one, but not alike, correct.
But I like it anyway.

Haven't found it yet- unfortunatly it is not in my disk archive, but maybe I find it in one mail I haven't saved to disk yet.
I'm quite sure I have information on it.

Sooo... How are things going? I don't know much about lanterns, but I presume there aren't any evidence for parchment being used?

The only one I know is a ship lantern entirely made from leather as far as I know, but I have no detailed information about that. All images, text sources I know point to horn plates being used.

Alright. Bertus posted something about bladders in another post about lanterns. Do any of you guys have more sources for that?
